"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."  John 3:16

God called us to serve!

"We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his  faith.  If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully."  Romans 12:6-8

Some refer to it as "volunteer" service -- we believe we are not "volunteers", but rather that God has called us and given us specific abilities to use for His service.  We submit ourselves to that calling, and the diverse talents of our members make anything possible with God's help.

Many of our members and guests used their God-given talents to help make Vacation Bible School, 2002, a success.  Under the direction of Vicki Sweetman, the following personnel served as teachers and assistants:  Danielle Feist, Jennifer Jackson, Janie Kennedy, Janet Kothmann, Lois Letchford, Rebecca Meeks, Loretta Owen, Pastor Paul, Elizabeth Phillips, Robert Ratliff, Julie Woelfel.  Team Leaders and Drama Team were:  Emily Arledge, Jeni Fields, Becca, Dena, and William Harris, Debbie Hedgecoth, Donna Zikmund.  Janice and Roger Pamperin allowed use of their press for printing T-shirts; Barbara Rose served as Registrar; Travis Simpson served as Ice and Pizza Man; delicious meals were prepared and served by Annie Miller with assistance from Helen Doege, Gloria, Joy Simpson, and Lee Worrell; Juliane Davis and Mark Feist provided nursery service; music was provided by Eunice and Emily Korinek and Diana Wilt; games were supervised by Chris Fields; art work was provided by Keena Cox; and Dan and Nick Sweetman provided miscellaneous support.  We thank God for the hard work of each of these people.

Braille Work Center #148 was started at Christ Lutheran Church over 20 years ago (September, 1981).  About 20 volunteers work in four different groups twice a month, producing 700 books each year to be sent to Third World countries.  Presently, they are producing the book of Exodus in the Malayalam language in Bharati Braille for shipment to India.  The Book of Luke is being produced in the Amharic language to be sent to Ethiopia.  The work center is an entity of Lutheran Braille Workers, Inc. who provides the Word of God to Third World countries who have no means to produce Braille material.  Their needs are so great that they will accept our Braille material and turn away other religious matter sent to their countries.  All of our workers feel they are indeed serving God by spreading His Word to those who might otherwise not hear it!

BIBLE MARKING FOR PRISON MINISTRIES

LWML members, parents of Midweek School students, and other interested members/visitors are currently marking Bibles for distribution to prisons and similar institutions.  The Bibles are marked with specific passages that take the reader from the first sin all the way through to God's saving grace and how the reader can attain salvation.  This program, which began in early 2000 with an anonymous donation of Bibles to be marked and sent to a jail in Harris County, Texas, has snowballed.  Aid Association for Lutherans now provides the Bibles to be marked, and 312 of those were recently distributed to the Lubbock County Detention Facility.  Some have been shipped to Chapel Hill, Texas, and about 300 were taken to Exodus Prison Ministry.  Many more Bibles are on hand and waiting to be marked -- if you can read and know how to operate a highlighter, we can use your help!  There are many who do not yet know Jesus but will learn of Him through these marked Bibles!

Active Prayer Chains acquire the immediate and on-going prayers of about 30 of our families at a time of special joy, need, or sorrow among our members and friends.

Seventh and eighth grade students serve as Altar Assistants and Acolytes.  The program is designed to provide an outlet for faith in service to our Lord and in proper use and care of the altar and chancel area of the church.

Ushering for worship services is a program which includes all men of Christ Church who enjoy serving in that capacity.

Offering tellers regularly assist the Financial Secretary in ensuring our returns of God's blessings to His work are appropriately accounted for.

Many of our members are involved in various service agencies such as Hospice of Lubbock, The Lutheran Home of West Texas and Wedgewood South, Neighborhood House, and numerous civic organizations.  Art Ormsby and Connie Bramlet were named the 2000 Volunteers of the Year for The Lutheran Home of West Texas.  They make weekly one-on-one visits to the Nursing Home residents.
