March 21st, 7:30 p.m.  Good Friday Worship with the Senior Choir presenting "Shadows", a service of Tenebrae by Douglas E. Wagner.

Seven episodes in the Passion and Death of Our Lord are the focus of the Good Friday service.  Interwoven themes of the grief, penitence, pity and forgiveness provide the backdrop for the service.  Each episode consists of a reading from the Gospel of Matthew or Luke, a choral meditation, and a responsive reading from one of the seven penitential Psalms.

The sanctuary darkens as the seven last words are spoken and one of seven candles is extinguished. Jesus’ final words, “It is finished,” results in total darkness. This follows the traditional service of “Tenebrae,” which means “darkness” or “shadows”, with the significance being the spiritual void, confusion and grief that filled the minds and spirits of Christ’s followers during his suffering, and of the darkness that covered the entire world at his death.

Choral renditions, limited sound and lighting effects, and the power of the message of the passion and wounds of Jesus will personalize the central meaning of this holy season for all Christians.

Sunday, March 23, 2007,8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
The Festival of the Resurrection with
the Senior Choir presenting "The Hallelujah Chorus".

The services will begin in a darkened sanctuary where the Good Friday service left Jesus’ followers who thought they now had no hope…their Savior had died!  The Senior Choir will offer several anthems, interspersed with responsive readings, to reflect the sadness experienced by those early Christians as they went to prepare Jesus’ body for the sleep of death.  But during the final anthem, the Christ candle is returned to the sanctuary, the lights are brightened, and the congregation will experience the full joy of Jesus’ resurrection!  The Senior Choir’s anthem is “Hallelujah Chorus” by Handel.  Members and guests will enjoy fellowship with brunch between the two services, and the children will hunt Easter eggs and then release balloons from the parking lot.
